How to find a good ISP

I started with a Google search for broadband checkers. There must be at least 50 different for the UK market alone. Looking for someone who could provide me with both phone and Internet (as they are not seperate, duh). It proved a tad more difficult than it seemed. If you check all the broadband deals that might appear, you will notice a clear trend.
- Unlimited and unmetered access. I cannot deal with limits. It is a simple excuse by the phone companies to charge you as if you were on dial up.
- Minimum of 8Mbit access. Come on, seriously. I had 10Mbit back in Sweden 10 years ago. What is going on here? 100Mbit is common over there.
- Xbox Live compatible. Damned right. They are starting movie downloads there and I am SO going to use that. Oh and I like a rough and tumble in Battlefield 2.
- Phone and broadband through the same company. Otherwise I get confused. Plus you save when you bundle.
- Less than £25 per month. I have a limit on how much I am willing to pay per megabit.
I actually found two companies that covered all these boxes, and it was Tiscali and Virgin. Tiscali fell through due to the bad reviews I have read, that they can blatantly cut down your connection if you are a heavy user.
Heavy user? I am a Sumo-user dangnaggit. Give me access 24/7 and full speed ahoy.
So sorry Tiscali, you lost a customer that way.
Hello Richard Branson, hire me for Virgin Galactic please.
Edit:
Please note that I have since changed my mind and I now consider all ISP’s in the UK for complete douche-bags! May they all crash on the stock market.
Telecoms should not be ISPs

You know, I had a really bad phone provider and ISP before. At least that is what people said. I used to be with Bulldog Broadband.
Seriously, you never hear the end of it. Of course I knew this from the beginning, when I first signed up with them several years ago. I wanted a company to provide me with Internet, but somehow it is impossible to get that without ordering phone lines and call packages and constantly being contacted by the provider with “special deals” designed to encourage me to part with my hard earned cash.
Not Bulldog though. After they hooked up my flat they left me pretty much alone, with an access that sometimes dropped out, but always worked.
Until I moved that is. Somehow, a move of less than 500 meters put me under the radar, and they blatantly refused to acknowledge the fact until I put them against the wall and said
“You really cannot provide me at this address can you?”
crackling over my mobile I heard a faint and feeble
“No. i am so sorry. I will refund you all the money for the months you have been without connection”.
All’s well that ends well. I will miss bulldog somehow, because they are the ONLY company that offered to take care of setting me up with a landline without having to go through BT.
BT… yes… I am afraid to say it, but I try to avoid them whenever possible, but that is a story for another day.
